We propose to create an orthopedic implant device that will treat infection from the point of fitting the external fixation device through later internal fixation. It is our hypothesis that an intramedullary nail with a bactericidal surface will eradicate acute infection and retard post-surgical infection. We have proposed the covalent bonding of two antibiotics, vancomycin and ciprofloxacin. This chimeric device will serve two important purposes. Firstly, it will provide aggressive antibiotic prophylaxis. Secondly, it will prevent biofilm formation on the implanted nail.
